Miners Drop Series Finale to Otters
August 28, 2016 - Frontier League (FL)
Southern Illinois Miners News Release
After clinching their third-straight division title on Saturday, the Southern Illinois Miners fell in the rubber match on Sunday against the Evansville Otters by a score of 10-1, dropping the series at Bosse Field two games to one.
A leadoff home run by Rolando Gomez against BROOKS TRUJILLO in the first inning put the Miners behind 1-0 right away, and the game would remain 1-0 until the fourth inning, when the Otters would plate two runs with two outs against JAKE PANNUNZIO, as after the left-hander came on with a man on base and struck out the first two batters he faced, Nik Balog doubled to right-center and after a walk, Julio Rodriguez singled home another run to make it 3-0.
The Miners' pitching staff would not be able to hold Evansville off the scoreboard in their final four turns at bat, as the Otters piled on with two runs in the fifth, single runs in the sixth and seventh and three more in the eighth inning. Offensively, the Miners were held down by Preston Olson (7-3), who allowed just one hit over seven innings of work.
Southern Illinois was able to get on the scoreboard in the seventh, as NOLAN EARLEY walked and ALEX DE LEON was hit by a pitch. After a fielder's choice, STEVE MARINO brought Earley home with a sacrifice fly to make the score 6-1 at the time before the Otters' late runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
The Miners will look to bounce back on Tuesday night at Gateway after an off day on Monday, facing the Grizzlies in a three-game midweek series beginning at 7:05 p.m. at GCS Ballpark as the regular season begins to wind down.
