Traverse City Beach Bums News Release


KALAMAZOO, MI ¡V The Traverse City Beach Bums were shutout by Jeff Long and the Kalamazoo Kings 6-0 at Homer Stryker Field on Wednesday night.

The Kings took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Mike Russell hit his sixth homer of the season leading off the inning against Ryan Gehring, clearing the wall in left.

Kalamazoo chased Ryan Gehring from the game in the fourth inning, again using the long ball to open a 4-0 lead. Simon Williams and Brendan Murphy each drew walks and Kyle Kmiecik hit a three-run homer down the line in left. Pete McEneaney relieved Gehring after a two-out double, he lasted just 3.2 innings in his shortest outing of the season. McEneaney worked a season high 2.1 innings out of the bullpen for the Beach Bums.

Jeff Long went the distance for the Kings, scattering seven hits and walking two while striking out eight to earn his third win of the season. The Kings continued to add to the lead as a run crossed in the bottom of the seventh against reliever James Ledford. Joe Ramos drove in the run with a single to give the Kings a 5-0 lead. The Kings made it 6-0 with an eighth inning run against Jeff Williams.

Patrick Perry was chosen as the Beach Bums Player of the Game. He finished 3-for-4 at the plate. Kalamazoo swept the series from the Beach Bums and pulled even with Traverse City atop the East Division standings.

The Beach Bums (16-11) will continue the roadtrip tomorrow night in Washington, Pa. against the Wild Things. RHP David Nathanson (4-1, 2.80) pitches for the Beach Bums against RHP Mike Schellinger (3-1, 0.66). The contest can be heard live on The Fox FM beginning with the Labatt Blue On Deck Show at 6:45 pm.
