Durham Bulls News Release

Durham, NC - Richard De Los Santos broke the Durham Bulls Triple-A record notching his 14th victory as he combined with two Bulls relievers on a 1-0 shutout win over Norfolk on Tuesday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. In their first home game since clinching the South Division title over the weekend, the Bulls extended their winning streak to nine games and have taken the first six of a seven game series with the last place Tides.

De Los Santos kept the Norfolk hitters in check through 6.2 scoreless innings of work, walking a pair and allowing six hits while striking out four. The Tides had a chance to take the lead in the second inning, when Lou Montanez tripled past a diving Justin Ruggiano in right field with a runner on first. Nolan Reimold tried to come around and score the first run of the game, but a pair of good relay throws and a great pick at home by Dioner Navarro nailed Reimold at the plate and kept Norfolk off the board.

The Bulls got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Ruggiano singled before Norfolk starter Troy Patton plunked Chris Richard and Rocco Baldelli to load the bases with nobody out. After saving a run earlier in the game, Navarro brought home the Bulls only run of the night with a sacrifice fly on the first pitch he saw, bringing home Ruggiano and giving Durham a 1-0 lead.

De Los Santos avoided trouble the rest of the way, earning his 11th quality start out of 21 on the season. With a runner on second and two out in the seventh inning, Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo went to left-hander Jake McGee to face lefty Matt Angle. The Bulls southpaw ended the threat, getting Angle to ground into a fielders choice before striking out the side in order in the eighth.

After posting a 3.57 ERA in 19 starts with Double-A Montgomery to start the season, McGee has not allowed an earned run since joining the Bulls on August 8. The 24-year-old left-hander has struck out 19 in his first 10.2 innings of work thus far in Triple-A.

Winston Abreu came on in the ninth, striking out two of the three hitters he faced to close out the win. It was his 21st save in 22 opportunities on the season, lowering his ERA to 1.78 in 47 games for the season.

The Bulls go for the rare seven-game sweep of Norfolk tomorrow, as they look to extend their win streak to 10 and set the team's Triple-A record with their 84th regular season win. RHP Ramon Ortiz (0-0 1.59) makes his first start in front of the home crowd for Durham. He will be matched up against XM Satellite Radio Futures Game participant LHP Zach Britton (2-2 3.12). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
