Chiefs Slip by IronPigs 5-4 on Tuesday Night

Allentown, PA - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, defeated the Lehigh Valley IronPigs by a 5-4 final on Tuesday night in front of a crowd of 9,104 at Coca-Cola Park. The game was tied at three headed into the ninth inning, but Michael Martinez hit a solo home run and Brian Bixler added an RBI triple to give Syracuse the winning runs.

Syracuse (66-63) scored in the first inning off of IronPigs starter Vance Worley. Danny Espinosa reached base on a one out single, and was knocked in on an RBI double by Bixler to the right-center field gap to make it 1-0 in favor of the Chiefs.

In the third, Lehigh Valley (52-78) took the lead off of Chiefs starter Matt Chico. With Greg Dobbs and John Mayberry on base, Andy Tracy added to his team-leading RBI total with two more on a double to right that scored both base runners and gave the IronPigs a 2-1 lead.

The Chiefs responded with two runs of their own in the fourth on back-to-back RBI singles by Chico and Davis. For Chico, it was his first RBI of the year with the Chiefs and just his fourth hit between Double-A, Triple-A, and the major leagues this season.

Leading 3-2 heading into the fifth, Syracuse allowed Lehigh Valley to lock the contest at three on an RBI single from Mayberry.

Chico pitched five innings to Worley's six and both bullpens began working what would be scoreless sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.

In the ninth Michael Martinez, who had not hit a home run all year for the Chiefs, led off with a blast to right to give Syracuse a 4-3 lead against 'Pigs pitcher Scott Mathieson. With two outs, Danny Espinosa walked on a full count, and Brian Bixler plated him with his second triple of the year and Syracuse led 5-3.

Josh Wilkie began pitching the bottom of the ninth for the Chiefs and retired leadoff batter Rich Thompson. He then walked Greg Dobbs to bring the tying run to the plate. Mayberry then hit a ground ball to the right side of the infield which hit off of Botts' glove, and then trickled to Seth Bynum at second base. Bynum threw wide of first base which allowed Dobbs to score and make it 5-4. Errors were charged to both Botts and Bynum on the play.

Wilkie forced a popout from Andy Tracy and then gave up a single to left off the bat of Cody Ransom. Adam Carr was then summoned from the Chiefs bullpen and threw just one pitch to Melvin Dorta who grounded out to end the ballgame.

The Chiefs and IronPigs will conclude their mini two-game series on Wednesday at Coca-Cola Park. Righty Shairon Martis (7-7,4.42) is scheduled to start for Syracuse against left hander Brian Mazone (6-12, 3.86) for Lehigh Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
