Bulls Win at Gwinnett, 4-2
April 12, 2010 - International League (IL1)
Durham Bulls News Release
(Lawrenceville, GA) For the second straight game Joe Dillon delivered a tie-breaking hit, as Dillon capped a four-run seventh on Monday with a two-run double. The result was a 4-2 win on Monday over Gwinnett, and Durham's first come-from-behind win of the young season.
Trailing 2-0, the Bulls rallied against reliever Scott Proctor (0-1). John Jaso singled to right, and Angel Chavez (3-for-4) followed with a looper to left off shortstop Brandon Hicks' glove. Rashad Eldridge followed with a perfect bunt to load the bases. A wild pitch cut the deficit to 2-1, and Fernando Perez then hit a sac fly to tie the game at two. Proctor fanned Justin Ruggiano, and then walked Matt Joyce intentionally after falling behind 3-0. That set the stage for Dillon who doubled on the first pitch to left-center, scoring both runners. Dillon now leads Durham with four doubles and five RBI.
That was enough for the Durham bullpen. Reliever Brian Baker (1-0) threw a scoreless sixth and seventh in his Durham debut, and then Joe Bateman put up a zero in the eighth. Joaquin Benoit, working for a second straight night for the first time since rotator cuff surgery, allowed a pair of one-out singles, but got Matt Young to fly to shallow left and Joe Thurston to bounce into a 6-4 fielder's choice to end the game. It was Benoit's first save.
The Braves had taken the lead with single runs in the second and third against Carlos Hernandez, who battled through five innings, allowing just four hits.
Durham (3-2) can clinch a winning road trip to start the year with a win on Tuesday. Jeremy Hellickson starts against James Parr at 7:05 from CoolRay Field in a battle of righties. Coverage on 620 the Buzz begins at 6:50 p.m.
