International League Names Players Of The Week
April 12, 2010 - International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Columbus catcher Carlos Santana and Charlotte pitcher Carlos Torres have been named the League's first Batter and Pitcher-of-the-Week for 2010. The period covers the first four days of the season, from April 8-11.
CARLOS SANTANA, Columbus Clippers IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
Catcher Carlos Santana entered the 2010 season as one of baseball's most highly regarded prospects, and four games into his Triple-A career he has lived up to the hype. Santana is hitting .438 so far, and he leads the International League with 4 home runs, 8 RBI, 6 extra-base hits, a 1.313 slugging percentage, and 21 total bases. The Clippers have scored 41 runs in their first four games, thanks in large part to Santana. On Opening Night at Huntington Park, Santana went deep twice while collecting four hits and four RBI in a 17-4 thrashing of Indianapolis. He added another long ball and three RBI the next night, plus a solo homer in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. Santana is the first catcher to be named IL Batter of the Week since Richmond's Corky Miller in August of 2008. The last Columbus catcher to be so honored was Izzy Molina in May of 1999.
Carlos Santana, who turned 24 on Opening Day Thursday, is in his fifth full season of professional baseball. Originally drafted by the Dodgers in 2005, Santana was traded to Cleveland in July of 2008 as part of the deal for Casey Blake. Santana was named MVP of the Class-A California League in 2008, and last year he was MVP of the Double-A Eastern League. Santana is a native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
CARLOS TORRES, Charlotte Knights IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
The reigning International League Postseason All-Star Starting Pitcher picked up right where he left off in 2009. Carlos Torres had a dominant debut in 2010, defeating Charlotte's division rivals from Gwinnett on Friday evening. Torres cruised through 6.0 innings, striking out eight Braves while allowing just four hits and one walk in what turned out to be a 3-1 victory for Torres and the Knights. Torres threw 54 of his 87 pitches for strikes. The win brings Torres' record as a Triple-A pitcher to
11-4, including the ten wins he accumulated last season for the Knights. Torres becomes the first member of the Knights to win an IL weekly award since first baseman Brad Eldred and pitcher Lance Broadway swept the awards in May of 2008.
27-year-old Carlos Torres is in his seventh season as a professional player, all of which has been spent in the White Sox organization. He made his Major League debut for Chicago last season, appearing in 8 games and posting a 1-2 record with a 6.04 ERA. Torres is a native of Santa Cruz, California.
