G-Braves Drop Series Opener to Durham Bulls, 4-2

The Lead: The Durham Bulls defeated the Gwinnett Braves 4-2 in their series opener on Monday night at Coolray Field. The G-Braves were able scratch out 8 hits, but left 16 runners stranded. Barbaro Canizares (DH) went 2-for-2 with a walk, RBI, and a run scored. Gwinnett (2-3) falls into a second place tie with Norfolk in the International League South. Durham (3-2) remains tied for first place with Charlotte.

It Was Over When: Scott Proctor's third relief appearance for Gwinnett went awry in the seventh as he gave up 4 R/ER on 4 hits to allow Durham to take the lead 4-2.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: In his first start of the season, LHP Jonny Venters allowed no runs on 2 hits and struck out 3 in 4.2 IP. Michael Dunn (RHP) struck out 4 in 1.1 IP. In the final inning, RHP Craig Kimbrel struck out 2.

At the plate: Canizares has a team-high 4-game hitting streak. Wes Timmons (3B) went 2-for-4 at the plate while SS Brandon Hicks went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Carlos Hernandez (LHP) went 5.0 innings and gave up 2 earned runs on 4 hits. Brian Baker pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief for the win.

At the plate: Angel Chavez (SS/3B) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and 2B Joe Dillon went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI in the game.

On Deck: Gwinnett hosts Durham in game two of a four-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Coolray Field. G-Braves RHP Chris Resop (0-1, 2.45 ERA) is scheduled to face LHP Heath Phillips of the Bulls.
