Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - Durham used home runs from Taylor Motter, J.P. Arencibia and Corey Brown to get all of its offense while four Bulls pitchers combined to hold Pawtucket to just six hits as the Bulls topped the PawSox, 5-1, in the opener of a three-game series on Friday night in front of 4,404 fans at McCoy Stadium.
Arencibia delivered the big blow, a tie-breaking three-run blast to left (2) against reliever Keith Couch (1-4). Jim Patterson (3.2 innings, one run), Jhan Marinez (1-0, 3.0 innings, one hit), Bryce Stowell (1.1 innings, two hits) and Ronald Belisario (1.0 innings, no hits) kept Pawtucket's offense quiet for most of the night.
Matt Barnes started for the PawSox, his first start in 12 days, and allowed a solo homer to Motter (2) to leadoff the game. Barnes kept the Bulls off the scoreboard for the remainder of his outing, lasting four full innings and striking out seven batters.
Pawtucket tied the score against Patterson in the bottom of the second when Garin Cecchini singled with one out. The next batter was Matt Spring, who doubled into the gap in right-center to score Cecchini and make the score 1-1.
Couch, whose previous four appearances this season came as a starter, entered in piggy-back relief of Barnes in the fifth and immediately struck out the side. In the sixth, however, Durham got a single from Brown and a double from Vince Belnome to set the stage for Arencibia, who clubbed the first pitch he saw to put the Bulls ahead 4-1.
Brown lifted a solo shot to right against Couch in the eighth to finish the scoring. It was the first time this season the PawSox pitching staff has allowed three home runs in one game.
Spring (2-for-4, RBI) was the only Pawtucket batter to collect multiple hits, while Alexi Casilla and Brown, the former PawSox outfielder, each had a pair for Durham.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday afternoon with first pitch at 1:05pm. Left-hander Eddie Rodriguez (2-0, 1.93) is expected to start for the PawSox while the Bulls counter with righty Matt Buschmann (2-1, 2.81). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 12:50 pm.
