Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Atlanta Braves announced today the recall of right-hander Mike Foltynewicz from Triple-A Gwinnett. Foltynewicz has been announced as the Braves' starting pitcher for tonight's 7:35 p.m. game against the Cincinnati Reds at Turner Field. It will be his first Major League start and 17th overall appearance.
Foltynewicz, 23, went 0-3 with a 2.08 ERA (5 ER in 21.2 IP) and one complete game in four starts for Gwinnett this season. At the time of his promotion, he ranked among International League leaders in strikeouts (1st, 30), strikeouts-per-9.0-inning ratio for starters (1st, 2.46), complete games (T-2nd, 1) and ERA (14th, 2.08).
Acquired by Atlanta along with infielder Rio Ruiz and right-hander Andrew Thurman from the Houston Astros in exchange for catcher Evan Gattis and right-hander James Hoyt on January 14, Foltynewicz is rated the Braves' No. 3 prospect by MLB.com. He is 0-1 with a 5.30 ERA (11 ER in 18.2 IP) in 16 career Major League appearances, all in relief with the Astros in 2014.
For his Minor League career, Foltynewicz is 32-31 with a 3.91 ERA (254 ER in 584.1 IP) in 120 games (108 starts) across six seasons. He was originally selected by Houston in the first round (No. 19 overall) of the 2010 June draft out of Minooka Community High School (IL).
The Gwinnett Braves (8-13) play game two of a four-game series against the Toledo Mud Hens (10-10) tonight at Coolray Field, first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Sugar Ray Marimon (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will start for the G-Braves, while the Mud Hens will counter with right-hander Buck Farmer (3-0, 3.00 ERA). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 6:30 p.m.
