Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Braves' (9-13) offense exploded for its most prolific performance of the season by far in a 15-1 drubbing of the Toledo Mud Hens (10-11) Friday at Coolray Field.

The G-Braves took game two of the four-game series against the Mud Hens thanks to 19 hits, their most in a single game since also pounding out 19 on July 20, 2014 in an 11-3 victory over Durham. The 14-run winning margin was the club's largest since a 16-2 win over Charlotte on August 20, 2014.

Eight of the nine batters in the Gwinnett lineup scored in the seventh inning alone. The G-Braves had seven hits in that frame against Toledo right-handed relievers Luke Putkonen and Rafael Dolis, including two from Adonis Garcia. He scored the first run of the inning on a single by Eury Perez. Matt Kennelly drove in two runners with a double, and Cedric Hunter picked up two of his three RBIs on a base hit to right field.

Hunter was one of three G-Braves' batters, along with Todd Cunningham and Barrett Kleinknecht, to record three hits.

Cunningham set the tone for the game with a diving catch in deep center field to end the top of the first inning. He then led off the bottom half of the inning with an infield single to third base. He advanced to second on a single by Jose Peraza and scored when Hunter laced the team's third consecutive hit with a single to right field. Peraza scored on a sacrifice fly by Garcia to put Gwinnett in front 2-0.

Cunningham's defense also played an important role in the second inning when he threw out Jordan Lennerton at home plate as he tried to score on a ground ball up the middle by Josh Wilson. Cunningham finished the night 3-for-5 and has hit safely 10 of his last 11 games.

Kleinknecht had two singles and a double with three RBIs in his first three at-bats. He also scored twice while going 3-for-4 with a walk.

Joe Benson went 2-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored. He ended Toledo starter Buck Farmer's night with a one-out single to center field in the sixth inning. The G-Braves totaled 10 hits and six runs (five earned) in 5.1 innings against Farmer.

Meanwhile, Gwinnett right-handed pitcher Sugar Ray Marimon (W, 1-0) did not give up a hit past the third inning and retired 11 of the final 13 batters he faced in 6.0 innings. He issued a walk, hit two batters and struck out one in his second start of the year for the G-Braves. The only run he allowed came in the third on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Fields that scored Bryan Holaday, who had reached base with a leadoff single.

Gwinnett right-handed reliever John Cornely pitched the seventh and eighth innings with one walk and one hit allowed to go with three strikeouts. Right-hander Mitchell Boggs finished the game with a scoreless ninth, although he had to strike out Fields to end the game after a walk and a pair of two-out singles loaded the bases.

All six of Toledo's hits came from the bottom three spots in the lineup. Wilson, Holaday and Xavier Avery combined to go 6-for-11 with a walk, while the rest of the team was 0-for-20 with two walks.

The G-Braves and Mud Hens will meet for the third time in their four-game series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Coolray Field. Left-hander Manny Banuelos (1-0, 4.43 ERA) will get the start for Gwinnett against fellow lefty Kyle Ryan (0-02, 4.43 ERA) of Toledo. Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday is "Star Wars Night" benefitting the Make-A-Wish Foundation. More than 30 Star Wars characters will be on hand to take pictures with fans, perform features such as light saber battles and more. Ten percent of each ticket sold will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. To purchase tickets, call the Coolray Field Ticket Office at 678-277-0340 or visit GwinnettBraves.com/tickets.
