Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC-Jeff Niemann pitched his first career complete game, stifling the Knights as the Bulls beat Charlotte, 7-1 on Wednesday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
It took Niemann (6-2, 3.76) 107 pitches to show why he's been on top prospect lists ever since the Rays drafted him with the fourth overall pick in the 2004 Draft. Over nine innings of work, he allowed seven hits, a run and a walk while striking out 12 batters, the most in a single appearance by a Bull in 2008. In so doing, he nearly overshadowed a stellar offensive night for Justin Ruggiano, who went 3-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs and three runs scored on the evening. Dan Johnson and Josh Johnson also went deep for Durham.
Esteban Loaiza (0-2, 6.55) took the loss in a major league rehabilitation assignment for the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.
Independence Week at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park continues Thursday at 7:05 p.m. as the Bulls and Knights play the final game out of three in Durham. Chris Mason (3-8, 6.33) will start for Durham and southpaw Clayton Richard (4-0 2.08) will go for Charlotte.
