Gwinnett Stripers News Release
DURHAM, NC. - The Durham Bulls plated three runs in the bottom of the second against G-Braves starter Julio Teheran, as it was all they'd need in a 3-2 win in game three of the four-game series Saturday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Gwinnett took an early lead, as Luis Durango led off the game with a single to left and a wild pitch by Durham starter Matt Torra moved Durango to second. Jack Wilson drew a walk, putting the first two men of the game on with no outs. Felix Pie hit into a 3-6 fielders' choice for the first out, moving Durango to third. Ernesto Mejia then got the scoring started with a sacrifice fly to center, plating Durango and giving the G-Braves a 1-0 lead. The RBI upped Mejia's league-leading count to 79 on the season.
After a solid first inning of work, Teheran struggled in the second. Stephen Vogt singled to left with one out, then Matt Mangini was hit by a pitch. Cole Figueroa singled to right, scoring Vogt from second to tie the game, 1-1, meanwhile Mangini moved to third on the play. Jesus Feliciano singled to right scoring Mangini for a 2-1 Charlotte lead. Rich Thompson doubled off the wall in left, moving Feliciano to third, and a wild pitch by Teheran enabled Feliciano to score to make it 3-1 Durham.
In the Gwinnett top of the third, Ruben Gotay led off with a double to left, and moved to third on a groundout to short by Durango. Wilson drove in Gotay with a RBI sacrifice fly to left, cutting the deficit to one run. That's where the scoring ended, as the G-Braves had a chance to tie the game in the sixth, as Josh Kroeger led off with a walk. Jose Yepez followed with a ground ball to Mangini at third. Mangini threw the ball away at first, but Kroeger tried to score on the play and was thrown out at the plate by Durham first baseman Henry Wrigley.
Teheran (L, 6-6) went 6.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits and he struck out two. Dusty Hughes pitched a scoreless seventh, and Anthony Varvaro worked a scoreless eighth.
Torra (W, 9-6) went 6.0 innings for the win, as he allowed six hits and two earned runs while walking three and striking out two. Ryan Reid worked 1.1 innings with two walks and one strikeout, and Brandon Gomes (S, 7) pitched the final 1.2 innings with one strikeout for his seventh save of the season.
The G-Braves had six hits on the night, and the only two extra-base hits came from Wilson who was 1-for-1 with a double, and Gotay, who was 1-for-4 with a double.
Vogt and Figueroa were each 2-for-3 for the Bulls and Thompson was 2-for-4.
The Gwinnett Braves (51-64) and Durham Bulls (55-60) play the finale of the four-game series on Sunday night. Left-hander Sean Gilmartin (0-1, 3.86) will pitch for the G-Braves against Durham left-hander Cesar Ramos (4-3, 2.17) with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m. Listen to the broadcast on AM 550/FM 102.9 WDUN in Gainesville, Georgia with Tony Schiavone calling the play by play.
