Bullpen Saves Day in Win over Mustangs
July 21, 2015 - Pioneer League (PL)
Grand Junction Jackalopes News Release
A night after blowing a 5-run lead, the Grand Junction Rockies saw a 5-0 lead cut to a run, but Alec Crawford stranded the tying run in the seventh, Julian Yan did the same in the eighth, and after they added a ninth inning run, Daniel Koger recorded the final 3 outs in a 6-4 win over the Billings Mustangs at Dehler Park.
Koger's save is his third of the season, as Michael Zimmerman, who allowed three runs over two innings out of the bullpen earns the first win of his career.
Javier Medina made his second start and held the Mustangs to three hits in four scoreless innings with three strikeouts. He has yet to allow a run through his first two outings.
Grand Junction took the lead before an out was recorded. Mylz Jones started the game with a single and after he stole second, Brendan Rodgers singled him in. After the Rockies scored an unearned run in the second, Tyler Nevin hit a 2-run homer, the first of his career, to make it a 4-0 game. Jensen Park singled home the Rockies fifth run of the night in the seventh, while Chris Rabago singled home Nevin to make it a 2-run game again in the ninth.
Rabago and Collin Ferguson had three hit nights for the Rockies as everyone in the lineup had at least one hit. Jonathan Piron had a pair. They had 14 hits on the night, though Nevin's was the only one that went for extra bases.
The win gets the Rockies to 17-15 on the season, but they remain 3 games back of Orem for first place in the South with 6 games to go in the half.
On Tuesday night, they'll play the final game of their 9-game trip through Montana. They have split the first eight.
