Wausau Woodchucks News Release

WAUSAU-July 13, 2011-A two-run Duncan McAlpine homerun in the eighth inning broke a 3-3 tie to propel the Green Bay Bullfrogs to a 5-3 victory over the Wisconsin Woodchucks Wednesday night at Athletic Park.

The Woodchucks surrendered an early two-run lead to the Bullfrogs, before taking the lead off All-Star Tim Giel in the middle innings, and surrendering the lead late to drop game two of the home-home-away series.

Anthony Drobnick took the loss for the ‘Chucks, while Tim Giel improved to 4-2 with the win. Adam Cimber notched the save, his third of the season.

After retiring the first four Bullfrogs hitters in order, Wisconsin starter Justin Burns allowed a one-out walk to Eric Peterson in the second inning, before allowing a two-run Phillip Ervin homerun to give Green Bay an early 2-0 lead.

Green Bay starter Tim Giel, an All-Star selection, faced the minimum through the first three-and-two-thirds innings, before running into trouble in the middle innings.

With two outs in the fourth, Jamie Bruno collected his first hit of the season, crushing an opposite-field fly ball far over the leftfield fence for the ‘Chucks first run on the night.

Cody Regis was hit by a pitch to leadoff the fifth inning, while Austin Coleman followed with a hit, and Tyler Heineman advanced the runners to second and third base with a sacrifice bunt.

Garrett Yrigoyen - Tuesday night's hero - hit a seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield to score Regis, and Brian Carroll allowed Coleman to score as he reached on an error - giving the ‘Chucks the lead.

After stranding the bases loaded in the fifth and curtailing the ‘Chucks rally at two runs, Giel pitched through the seventh inning - notching a quality start and allowing five hits, no walks and two earned runs through seven innings of work.

Burns tightened up following the homerun, going on to pitch the next four innings, allowing only one more hit. Not factoring into the decision, Burns posted a final line of two hits, four walks and two runs allowed, while striking out three through six innings pitched.

Inheriting a 3-2 lead, newcomer Gabe Feldman made his first Woodchucks appearance in the seventh inning, taking over for Burns.

His first batter faced, Duncan McAlpine, drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a following hit and fielder's choice, before tying the game as Robbie De La Cruz' throw from first base on Ryan Allgrove's sacrifice bunt was too late to apply a successful tag.

Anthony Drobnick relieved Feldman in the eighth inning, only to allow a two-out, two-run blast to Duncan McAlpine, breaking the tie and giving Green Bay a 5-3 lead.

The Bullfrogs used Mark Garcia and Adam Cimber in the eighth and ninth innings to shut down the ‘Chucks and secure the win, allowing only one hitter to reach base.

After allowing the ‘Chucks to win on a walk-off single Tuesday night, Adam Cimber notched the save Wednesday, dispatching the Woodchucks with two strikeouts in the ninth.

The series will relocate to Green Bay Tuesday night, as the ‘Chucks and Bullfrogs conclude their three game series, before the Woodchucks return to Athletic Park Friday for one game against the Eau Claire Express.
