Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - The Madison Mallards fell to the Waterloo Bucks 5-2 Tuesday night in front of 5,482 fans at the "Duck Pond," as they could not overcome a four-run first inning by the Bucks. The loss brings the Mallards' losing streak to five games, and the season series with Waterloo is now tied at three games apiece.
Waterloo got off to a fast start and was able to maintain momentum throughout the game.
The Bucks sent eight batters to the plate in the first inning and stranded only one as they plated four runs out of the gate. College teammates Davis Hendrickson (Illinois) and Thomas Lindauer (Illinois) started the game by both hitting singles. Cameron Perkins (Purdue) would follow with a walk to load the bases before the Mallards' defense could record an out. RBI singles by Jordan Adams (Central Michigan) and Sean Borman (Des Moines Area Community College) would round out the inning for Waterloo.
Adams would score another run in the third to give Waterloo their fifth and final run of the night.
The Mallards continued their offensive struggles, as the team could only manage two runs Tuesday. They got their scoring started in the bottom half of the third inning, down 5-0, when Mike McQuillan (Iowa) led off with a double to left-center field and would score on a hit by Jordan Owen (Tennessee - Martin). The Mallards would tally one more in the fourth as Andrew Wasmund (Madison College) came around on a two-out triple by McQuillan.
Madison had other solid scoring chances throughout the game but could not cash them in. The team left multiple runners on base in three innings, including a bases-loaded end to the first inning. In all, the team left a total of eleven men on base and stranded runners in seven of the nine innings played.
Chris Lamb (Davidson) took the loss for Madison. He went only four innings and gave up all five runs on eight hits. He also walked three and struck out four, falling to 0-2 on the season.
Travis Parker (St. Louis) and Tony Bryant (Oregon State) combined for five innings of one-hit baseball in relief. Parker walked one and had four strike outs and Bryant got three ground outs in the ninth to carry the pitching.
The Bucks got the win from Joe Zwierzynski (Michigan State). Zwierzynski picked up his first win this season by going two solid innings and allowing no runs on two hits. He struck out two batters. Jonathan Perez (St. Mary's University) pitched the eighth and the ninth to notch his first save of the season.
The Mallards will host the Bucks in game two of the three-game set Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at the "Duck Pond." Jonathon Crawford (Florida) will start for the Mallards, and the Bucks will counter with 2011 All-Star Chase Stevens (Seminole State Community College).
