Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - July 13, 2011. The Madison Mallards fell 6-1 at the hands of the Waterloo Bucks on Wednesday night in front of 6,471 fans at the "Duck Pond." The loss was the second in as many nights against the Bucks, who now lead the season series with Madison four games to three.
For yet another game, the Mallards allowed their opponent to score first, and Waterloo took advantage of the opportunity.
The game was a back-and-forth pitcher's duel through the first four innings, and there was no score heading into the fifth, but the floodgates opened as the Bucks tallied five runs in the frame to take a 5-o advantage. Sean Borman (Des Moines Area Community College) and Jeremy Lucas (Indiana State) had doubles and scored in the inning. Also scoring was Davis Hendrickson (Illinois), Cameron Perkins (Purdue), and Chris Migani. Collectively, Waterloo had five of their seven hits in the fifth and stranded only one runner.
Hendrickson also scored in the seventh inning after a leadoff walk. Jordan Adams (Central Michigan) also drove in a team-high three runs despite going 1-for-4. Lucas and Borman were the only two Waterloo players with multiple hits, and both of Borman's hits went for doubles.
The Mallards' offense struggled and failed to score more than two runs for the sixth straight game. The team was shut out until the ninth inning when All-Star Nate Theunissen (Central Michigan) lined a home run to left-center field to put Madison on the board. Justin Parr (Illinois) and Jordan Owen (Tennessee - Martin) collected the other two hits for the Mallards, who went without a base hit from the third inning all the way to the eighth. The team was walked five times, and struck out twelve times.
The win went to Waterloo starter Chase Stevens (Seminole State Community College). The All-Star pitcher went 6.2 innings, allowing no runs on just one hit. He walked five but also struck out ten Mallards' hitters, earning his fourth win of the season and bringing his ERA down to 2.72.
Mallards' pitcher Jonathan Crawford (Florida) took the loss. Crawford went five innings and gave up five runs on six hits. He walked four and struck out six, falling to 1-1 on the season.
The Mallards will finish their three-games series with the Bucks Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Estevan Uriegas (Texas A&M) will pitch for the Mallards, and Derek Lamacchia (Quinnipiac) will throw for Waterloo.
