May 29, 2022 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

Despite holding the Augusta GreenJackets to just two hits for the game, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans dropped Sunday's series finale 3-1 to finish the week 4-2. Two losses in a row dropped the Pelicans to a 32-12 record while the GreenJackets stand at 23-22. Myrtle Beach still holds a one-game lead over the Charleston RiverDogs in the Carolina League South division standings.

The only offense of the evening came from Kevin Made (1-4, 2B, RBI) who brought home a run with a double in the fourth inning. Kevin Alcantara (2-4, R) scored the run while posting the only multi-hit performance of the game.

Sunday's Myrtle Beach starter Porter Hodge (3-1) dropped his first game of the year while only lasting just shy of two innings. The right-hander sacrificed three runs, all unearned, off two hits and a walk with two punchouts. Luis Angel Rodriguez has a great relief outing with 4 2/3 hitless innings with six strikeouts and a walk. Frankie Scalzo pitched the final 1 2/3 innings without giving up a hit as well.

Augusta's big hit came from Brian Klein (1-4, 2B, 2 RBI) with a two-run double in the second inning. The other hit came from Caleb Durbin (1-4) with a single in the first.

Jordano Perez (2-2) was solid through six innings by allowing just two hits and one earned run with five strikeouts. The save went to Darling Floretino after closing out the final 1 2/3 frames with two hits and a walk allowed with one strikeout on the final batter.

The GreenJackets packed all their scoring into one inning as three runs came across in the second. Stephen Paolini led off the inning by reaching base on a fielding error by Made at shortstop. Connor Blair worked a walk and a pitch from Hodge hit Mahki Backstrom to load the bases with nobody out. Hodge threw a wild pitch to score Paolini before retiring the next two batters on pop-ups. With two runners on and two outs, Klein drove a 2-2 pitch to deep center for a two-run double to put the GreenJackets ahead 3-0.

The Pelicans' lone run came with two outs in the top of the fourth as Alcantara singled to center. Made followed with a double to left to cut the lead to 3-1.

Augusta didn't escape too easily as Myrtle Beach loaded the bases in the ninth but failed to score. Alcantara hit an infield single to third with one out to get the offense rolling. After Made was retired. BJ Murray walked, and Jacob Wetzel lined a single to left to load the bases. Down to their final out and the tying run on second, Felix Stevens struck out swinging to end the game.

The Pelicans return to Myrtle Beach for a series with the Delmarva Shorebirds starting on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
