Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Isaac Bellony's cycle in a 5-for-5 performance led the way for the Delmarva Shorebirds in a 14-6 win over the Charleston RiverDogs on Sunday evening at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Ballpark.
The win helped the Shorebirds (16-29) stave off a potential series sweep by the RiverDogs (31-14).
Bellony started his cycle bid in the very first inning, stroking an RBI single to open the scoring.
The Shorebirds broke the game open in the third with eight runs, beginning with Bellony's next step in the cycle: a two-run double. Noelberth Romero added an RBI single, Isaac De León walloped a three-run homer, his third of the year, and Roberto Martinez blasted a two-run shot, his first of the year, to put the 'Birds up 9-0.
Charleston got two back in the bottom of the inning on a run scoring passed ball and RBI fielder's choice for Dru Baker.
The 'Birds got one of those runs back in the fourth when Bellony tripled for his next stage in the cycle, and then scored on a wild pitch.
A run came in for Charleston in the bottom of the fourth on a Shane Sasaki RBI single, cutting it to a 10-3 game.
Bobby Seymour socked a solo homer, his sixth of the year, to draw Charleston one closer in the fifth.
Bellony walked in the sixth and came around to score on a wild pitch before Roberto Martinez and Luis Valdez had back-to-back RBI singles to make it 13-4.
Bellony completed his cycle in the seventh, blasting a solo homer, his sixth of the season, to make it 14-4 as he accrued a single, double, triple, and homer in order.
Abiezel Ramirez brought home two with a double in the ninth for Charleston but it was too little too late as the 'Birds held on for a 14-6 win.
Conor Grady (3-3) picked up the win out of the bullpen for the Shorebirds, going four innings while allowing two runs on four hits and four walks, striking out three.
JJ Goss (0-2) suffered the loss for the RiverDogs, conceding seven runs in two-plus innings on seven hits and two walks, striking out three.
Bellony finished the game 5-for-5, as he added a single in the ninth for good measure. He drove in three runs and scored four times to lead an offensive attack that plated a season-high 14 runs and pounded out a season-high 15 hits.
After an off-day Monday, the Shorebirds continue their 12-game road swing with a six-game set beginning on Tuesday, May 31 against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Starters to open the series have not yet been announced for either team. First pitch on Tuesday from TicketReturn.Com field is slated for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
