INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Indians right-hander Bryan Bullington has been claimed off waivers by the Cleveland Indians and optioned to Triple-A Buffalo (N.Y.). The 27-year-old made 59 career starts for the Tribe during the 2005, 2007 and 2008 seasons.

Bullington posted a 4-6 record and 5.52 ERA in 15 starts for Indianapolis this season. He allowed 90 hits, 25 walks and a .298 batting average against, while striking out 60 in 75.0 innings.

"I'm disappointed, but these decisions are part of the game," Bullington said on July 3 after being designated for assignment. "The Pirates front office didn't see me as a guy in their immediate (Major League) plans, but I'm hoping someone does. I feel like I'm as healthy as I've been the past three years."

Bullington also spent 15 days with Pittsburgh from May 29-June 12, but did not pitch during that time.

"I had strung together four decent starts before getting called up, and then I lost that momentum," Bullington said. "After that, it was tough to get a good feel for things."

Bullington made 18 starts for Indianapolis in 2005 and 26 starts for the Indians in 2007. He missed all of 2006 while recovering from right shoulder surgery.

Bullington went 9-5 with a 3.38 ERA in 2005 and 11-9 with a 4.00 ERA in 2007. He started the Triple-A All-Star Game in 2007 and was named the Tribe's Comeback Player of the Year at the end of that season.

"I really appreciate everything the Pirates have done for me," Bullington added after being designated. "I have developed a lot of great friendships with people in the Pirates organization (coaches, players, front office, etc.), so this is a really tough day for me."

Bullington was taken by Pittsburgh with the first overall pick in the 2002 draft. He set several school records at Ball State University from 2000-02 and earned First-Team All-America honors after his junior season.

"I've always said that Indianapolis is a great place to play if you have to be in Triple-A," Bullington pointed out. "I have really enjoyed the city and Victory Field is one of the nicest Minor League ballparks in the country."
