Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis. - The Bullfrogs came into their game on Thursday against the Kalamazoo Growlers averaging more than seven runs per game in their last five games. On Thursday, the Bullfrogs would more than double that average as they pounded out sixteen hits to score sixteen runs and win the game, 16-1, and earn a series sweep against Kalamazoo.
Things started early for Green Bay when they scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Ryan Howell (Chabot) led the inning off with a double before he was knocked in on a Jimmy Coady (UW-Stevens Point) RBI-double. Kalamazoo would respond in the third to tie things up at one, but the Bullfrogs responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the third. Howell hit a three-run home run over the left field wall to give the Bullfrogs a 4-1 lead after three.
The scoring would continue for the Bullfrogs in the fourth and fifth innings. Dennis Colon (Illinois State) led the fourth inning off with a single before Paul Jacobson (South Dakota State) plated him with an RBI-single. In the fifth inning, Dean Long (Emporia State) followed Howell's lead and hit a two-run home run over the left field wall to give the Bullfrogs a 7-1 lead after five innings.
The Bullfrogs would blow the game open in the sixth inning with nine runs on six hits. Hits by Jacobson and Ivan Vieitez (Lenoir-Rhyne) and back-to-back Bullfrogs were hit by pitches to give the Bullfrogs two early runs to start the inning. Ryan Koziol (Gulf Coast State) then knocked in two runs with a double, and RBI-hits from Colon, Jacobson, and Vieitez later in the inning all plated runs. Andrew Goldstick (Washington Univ.) and Jamie Ritchie (Belmont) each drew a walk in the inning that scored one run a piece. After the dust had settled in the inning, the Bullfrogs ended the sixth inning with a commanding 16-1 lead.
Howell finished the night 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI, Jacobson was 3-for-3 with two RBI, Vieitez went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and Dean Long finished the night 1-for-three with three RBI and three runs scored.
Green Bay scored 16 runs in the game but two was all they really needed thanks to a quality pitching performance from Bullfrogs starting pitcher, Tyler Buss (Coffeyville CC). Buss threw eight strong innings for the Bullfrogs, giving up just one run on three hits while striking out two to pick up with win. Sam Brunner (Dodge City CC) threw a scoreless ninth inning for Green Bay.
Jacob Post took the loss for Kalamazoo. Post threw four innings giving up seven runs on nine hits.
The Bullfrogs will now head off to Madison for a two-game road trip on Friday and Saturday before returning to Joannes on Sunday to take on the Lakeshore Chinooks.
