Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis. - The Green Bay Bullfrogs returned home on Wednesday following a four-game road trip to meet the Kalamazoo Growlers at Joannes Stadium. With seven of the games thirteen runs scored in the first three innings, the final two innings saw six runs scored and the Bullfrogs coming from behind to win the game by a score of 7-6.
The Bullfrogs entered the ninth inning with a 5-3 lead and were just three outs away from a win. After an out to the first Kalamazoo batter, the next four Growlers would reach on hits. Ryan Lidge would eventually score on a passed ball to pull Kalamazoo to within one run at 5-4. Tim Montgomery would then follow with a single that plated Jalen Phillips to tie the game at five. Ryan Spaulding came up after Montgomery and knocked in the then go-ahead run to five the Growlers a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Green Bay started things off in the bottom of the ninth when leadoff man Dean Long (Emporia State) reached on an error by the third baseman. Ryan Howell (Chabot) College was then hit by a pitch and after a sacrifice bunt by Paul Jacobson (South Dakota St.), the Bullfrogs had runners on second and third with just one out. Jimmy Coady (UW-Stevens Point) then executed a suicide squeeze play to perfection, reaching first on the bunt while also scoring Long from third to tie the game at six. Dennis Colon (Illinois State) was then intentionally walked to set the stage for Matthew de la Rosa (Lenoir-Rhyne).
De la Rosa came to the plate with the bases loaded, one out, and the game tied, 6-6. He then crushed a 1-0 pitch to right-center field that went off the wall to knock in the game-winning run, Howell, from third and give the Bullfrogs the victory.
Before the hectic ninth inning happened, the Bullfrogs fell behind early in the game, allowing Kalamazoo to score two runs in the top half of the first inning. Green Bay would respond in their half of the first inning with four runs of their own to give the Bullfrogs a 4-2 lead after one inning. Matt Beaty (Belmont), Ivan Vieitez (Lenoir-Rhyne), Howell, and John Soteropulos (California) all had hits in the inning. An error by the Growlers shortstop led to two Bullfrogs runs and the four runs scored forced Kalamazoo's starter, Shane Bryant, from the game after just one inning.
Kalamazoo would go on to score one more run in the third to make it 4-3. The Bullfrogs added a run in the bottom of the eighth when the Growlers walked in Coady.
Ethan Rosebeck (Pima Community College) started on the mound for the Bullfrogs, throwing five innings while giving up three runs on six hits. Luke Watson (UW-Stevens Point) pitched the ninth inning for the Bullfrogs and earned the win. Dillon Haviland pitched just one-third of an inning in the ninth but took the loss for Kalamazoo.
The Bullfrogs return to action on Thursday night for game two of their series against Kalamazoo. First pitch is slated for 7:05 pm from Joannes Stadium.
