Green Bay, Wis. - The Green Bay Bullfrogs returned to Joannes Stadium on Sunday to begin a four-game series with the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. After the game went into extra innings, the Rafters eventually emerged victorious in the eleventh inning by a score of 5-4, scoring the game winning run on a wild pitch.
Wisconsin Rapids started the eleventh inning with a double from Erik Payne (Virginia Tech), before he advanced to third on a groundout. Payne then scored two batters later on a wild pitch that gave the Rafters the lead.
Matt McClain (St Mary's-Texas) allowed the lead-off hitter for the Bullfrogs to reach base in the eleventh inning, but then sat down the following three Green Bay players to preserve the lead and pick up the save for Wisconsin Rapids.
Justin Mullens (UC-Davis) took the loss for the Bullfrogs while Nolan Blackwood (Memphis) pitched a scoreless tenth inning to pick up the win for the Rafters.
Wisconsin Rapids nearly plated the go-ahead run in the top half of the ninth inning after loading the bases with nobody out. However, Matt Sabel (UW-Oshkosh) got the next two Rafters out on a fly ball and strikeout before Koziol made a spectacular diving catch in left field to rob the Rafters of the go-ahead run and get the third out in the inning.
The Bullfrogs also had the game winning run on third base in the ninth inning but the Rafters got the out at home on a safety squeeze attempt by Green Bay and the game headed into extra innings.
Before Wisconsin Rapids scored in the eleventh, they struck first on Sunday, scoring four runs in the second inning. Kirby McGuire (New Mexico) and Zack Domingues (Long Beach State) both had RBI's for the Rafters in the inning as they opened up an early four run lead on Green Bay.
The Bullfrogs got one of the four runs back in their half of the second inning. Ryan Koziol (Gulf Coast State) started things off with a double in the second inning. After a Julian Russell (Chicago State) single advanced Koziol to third, and Tony Brandner (No. Illinois) drew a walk, Matt Beaty (Belmont) came to the plate and drew a bases loaded RBI-walk to make the score 4-1 in favor of Wisconsin Rapids.
The score would remain 4-1 until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Bullfrogs would score three runs to tie the game at four. A Brandner RBI sacrifice fly scored Ivan Vieitez (Lenoir-Rhyne) for the first run of the inning. Pinch-hitter Paul Jacobson (South Dakota State) then followed Brandner with an RBI single that scored Koziol. Jacobson later came around to score on an error by Wisconsin Rapids off of a Beaty single.
Corey Fischer (Madison College) started on the mound for the Bullfrogs on Sunday and earned a no decision after pitching one and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits.
The Bullfrogs and Rafters will continue their four game series on Monday and Tuesday in Wisconsin Rapids, before returning to Green Bay to play the final game on Wednesday night. First pitch on Monday night is scheduled for 7:05 PM from Witter Field in Wisconsin Rapids.
