Alexandria, MN - June 22, 2014. Late inning heroics by the Alexandria Blue Anchors (6-20) downed the Madison Mallards (14-10) this afternoon at Knute Nelson Memorial Park in Alexandria, Minnesota. The Mallards scored all five runs in the second inning, but the Blue Anchors came back, scoring two in the eighth and four in the ninth to win in walk off fashion.

The Mallards opened up the scoring in the second with five runs on five hits and three Blue Anchor fielding errors. Catcher Austin Barr, who went 2-for-3 with one run, singled to start things off and would come around to score on an overthrow at second. Shortstop Adam Walton (Illinois) would add a sacrifice fly to move runners into scoring position, and center fielder Will Krug (Illinois) singled to send in second baseman Robbie Tenerowicz (California). The Mallards would add three more runs with two outs in the inning to go ahead 5-0.

Starter Christian Taugner (Brown) went six innings in his fifth start for the Mallards, striking out eight with no walks while giving up four hits and no runs.

The Blue Anchors went into the bottom of the ninth down 5-2, but timely hits, three walks and two wild pitches in the ninth gave the Mallards their tenth loss of the year. Roman Collins (DMACC) singled to drive in the winning run from third off Mallards closer Tim Black (Central Michigan).

The Mallards finish their two game series against the Blue Anchors tomorrow in Alexandria at 6:35 pm before returning to the "Duck Pond" on Tuesday, June 24th to face the Wisconsin Woodchucks (16-8).

Tuesday night is Boy Scout Night and will feature a Zimbrick Honda LEGO Giveaway. There will also be a UW Health Sports Medicine Developing Healthy Off-Speed Pitching Mechanics Clinic from 9 am - 12 pm.
