Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis. - The Green Bay Bullfrogs found themselves in a pitcher's duel on Monday night against the Lakeshore Chinooks. Despite a solid pitching performance by Roberto Baroniel, a home run by the Chinooks in the seventh inning propelled them to victory, winning game two of the series by a score of 2-1.
Green Bay's starting pitcher, Roberto Baroniel (Nova Southeastern) found himself in a pitcher's duel with Lakeshore's Mike Letkewicz (Augustana). Baroniel did not give up a hit to the Chinooks through the first five and two-thirds innings, allowing just one batter to reach base.
With two outs in the sixth inning, the Chinooks bats finally got going when Jake Noll (Florida Gulf Coast) hit a double down the left field line. Brant Valach (Eastern Illinois) then followed with an RBI-single that scored the Chinooks first run of the game to tie the score at 1-1.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Chinooks pulled ahead with a one out home run by Michael Morman (Valparaiso) off of Baroniel that was ultimately the game-winning run.
Baroniel took the tough loss for the Bullfrogs, pitching seven and two-thirds innings, allowing just the two runs on three hits while striking out four. Jake Tuttle (UW-Milwaukee) came in relief after Letkewicz in the sixth inning and picked up the win for the Chinooks, throwing three innings and giving up just one hit. Letkewicz allowed six hits, but just one run to the Bullfrogs while earning a no decision.
The Bullfrogs started the scoring for the night in the bottom of the fourth inning with a run scored by Matt Beaty (Belmont). Beaty reached first on a single before advancing to second and third base on wild pitches. Ryan Howell (Chabot) then came to the plate and ripped an RBI-single to score Beaty from third for the only Bullfrogs run on the night.
In the ninth inning, Lakeshore brought on closer Luke Lowery (Southern Mississippi) to preserve the Chinooks lead. It would not be easy for Lowery as he had to face the middle of the Bullfrogs order and he got into some trouble in the final inning. Howell lead off the ninth with a double for Green Bay, and after a Dean Long (Emporia State) sacrifice bunt, the Bullfrogs had the tying run at third with just one out.
Ryan Koziol (Gulf Coast State) reached on a walk after Long's bunt, and after advancing to second on defensive indifference, Green Bay had the game winning run on second with Howell on third. However, Lowery worked out of the jam, striking out the final two Bullfrog batters to pick up the save for Lakeshore and preserve the win.
Howell finished the night 2-for-4 with one RBI, extending his hitting streak to six games. Beaty also went 2-for-4 on Monday and Koziol ended the night 2-for-3.
The Bullfrogs return to action on Tuesday night for the start of a two-game home series with La Crosse at Joannes Stadium. First pitch is slated for 7:05 pm.
