Ray Sawada fired his 10th goal of the season and added an assist but it wasn't enough as the St. John's IceCaps fell 4-3 to the Hamilton Bulldogs Tuesday night at Hamilton's Copps Coliseum.
Defenceman Nathan Beaulieu collected a pair of goals to pace the Bulldogs and was the game's first star.
Stefan Chaput opened the scoring for the Bulldogs with a powerplay marker at the 13:06 mark of the first period. Jason Gregoire put St. John's on the board at 2:58 of the second stanza, converting a wrap-around, with helpers going to Sawada and Ben Maxwell.
Goals by Joe Stejskal and Beaulieu put Hamilton up 3-1 in the second but 56 seconds after Beaulieu's marker, St. John's responded with a goal by Aaron Gagnon on a goal-mouth scramble. Derek Meech and Carl Klingberg picked up assists on Gagnon's second of the season at 17:03.
Beaulieu made it 4-2 Bulldogs in the third before Sawada responded at 7:35 from Meech and Jason Jaffray on the powerplay. St. John's outshot Hamilton 13-4 in the third period, and 42-29 overall, but could not get the equalizer.
