Pirates Use Special Teams to Best Bruins

Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates used goals on their first three power plays to help them beat the Providence Bruins 6-3 at the Cumberland County Civic Center Tuesday night, The win gives the Pirates a tie for first place in the Atlantic Division with the Bruins. Portland was helped by the performance of Louis Domingue in net, stopping 32 of 35 shots for the win in his first AHL start.

The first period had all the signs of a battle between top ranked division rivals, with physical play from both sides early on. Chris Brown dropped the gloves with Kevan Miller four minutes into opening frame. Three minutes later, Pirates' Captain Alexandre Bolduc took exception to a Matt Bartkowski hit and squared off with the Bruins defenseman. Torey Krug put the Bruins on the board first, beating Domingue blocker side for his ninth of the year at 10:56. The Bruins' lead was short lived, as. Jordan Martinook beat Providence starter Niklas Svedberg for his third of the year at 11:46.

The Pirates used the power play to build a lead in the second period. Bruins forward Bobby Robins, the AHL leader in penalty minutes, was sent off for high sticking 1:37 into the period. Brown took a drop pass from Bolduc and sent a wrist shot passed Svedberg for his 17th goal of the season at 3:12. The Pirates struck again on the power play less than two minutes later as Martinook would net his second of the game for his first career multi goal and multi point game and a 3-1 Pirates lead.

The Bruins pulled within one early in the third period. Miller sent a shot from the blue line passed a screened Domingue for his second of the year at 1:48. The Pirates respond again on the power play, with Brown registering his second power play tally of the night at 7:13 of the period. Portland even capitalized on a Bruins' power play, as Bolduc picked up a loose puck for a breakaway, sliding a loose puck under the pads of Svedberg for the shorthanded goal, his 20th of the season at 10:34. The Bruins were able to get a goal of their own on the same power play, with Craig Cunningham picking up a rebound and cutting the Pirates lead to 5-3. That was as close as the Providence would get, as Rob Klinkhammer added an empty net goal, his 14th of the season, to cap off a 6-3 victory.

The Pirates improve to 32-19-1-1 as Louis Domingue picks up his first career AHL win in his first start with the team. Providence falls to 31-18-0-4, while Niklas Svedberg drops to 25-7-2-3.

The Pirates get back to action Saturday night as they face the Worcester Sharks on Purple Night, presented by Maine Medical Center. The Pirates will wear special purple jerseys to honor all those affected by cancer, their caregivers, and their families. Puck drop is set for 7 PM at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
