
Bulldogs fall to Leafs in OT

ST. JOHN'S, NF - Joel Kwiatkowski scored at the 2:07 mark of overtime to give the St. John's Maple Leafs a 4-3 victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs at Mile One Stadium on Friday night.
Hamilton's record through 66 games now stands at 28 wins, 26 losses, 7 overtime losses, and 5 shootout losses. The Bulldogs earned one point in the contest and now have 68 points on the season.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring just 20 seconds into the game. Chris Higgins scored his team leading 24th goal of the season on a breakaway. Tomas Plekanec added the lone assist on Higgin's goal.
St. John's would then respond with two goals. Brad Leeb fired a low shot past Bulldogs goaltender Yann Danis at 8:00, and then Kyle Wellwood backhanded a shot for a Maple Leafs goal at 12:22.
The Bulldogs evened the score 2-2 before the end of the first period. Jason Ward raced up the wing and made a nice centering pass to defenceman Trevor Daley, who took a low shot to earn his fifth goal of the season. Gavin Morgan also earned an assist on the play.
Wellwood scored his second goal of the night for St. John's at 12:25 of the second period. David Ling and Matt Stajan picked up the assists.
The Bulldogs evened the game 3-3 at 12:22 of the third period. Steve Begin went to the Maple Leafs net, took a pass, and shot in his third goal of the season.
The game eventually went to overtime. The Maple Leafs David Ling intercepted the puck at the Bulldogs blue line, and made a pass to Kwiatkowski, who fired in the game-winner at 2:07.
In goal, Bulldogs goaltender Yann Danis made 22 saves, while suffering the loss. For St. John's, Mikael Tellqvist stopped 38 shots to earn the victory.
The Hamilton Bulldogs next action will take place on Saturday, March 19th when the Bulldogs will play the St. John's Maple Leafs for the final time at Mile One Stadium.
