LAREDO, TX: The Laredo Bucks, of the Central Hockey League, defeated the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 5-3.
The Laredo Bucks and Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees went head to head for the 8th time this season. They faced each other Tuesday night in Rio Grande Valley, where the Bees narrowly won 4-3
The Laredo Bucks penalty kill was hard at work during the first period of play killing off three Killer Bee powerplays. Matt Boyd lit the lamp for the Bucks at 8:03, when he scored a short-handed unassisted goal giving the Bucks a 1-0 lead. Torrie Jung remained flawless during the frame. The Bucks were outshot by the Bees 16-9.
The Bucks came out firing in the second period of play. Laredo quickly jumped on the board, thanks to a powerplay goal by Erik Boisvert only 59 seconds into the period. Neil Trimm assisted on the goal. At 5:10 in the second, Matt Pierce scored his 5th goal of the season giving the Bucks a 3-0 lead. Neil Trimm and Torrie Jung, Jungs' first point of the year, assisted on the goal. The Bees battled back scoring three unanswered goals tying the game 3-3. The Bucks went on the powerplay once again with on 28 seconds remaining in the period. Rusty Masters was able to tip in a shot from David Inman with 5.9 seconds remaining. Neil Trimm once again assisted on the goal that gave the Bucks a 4-3 lead.
Laredo controlled the puck for most of the third period, only allowing 5 shots on net for the Killer Bees. The Bees pulled their goalie with 1:14 left on the clock, but the Bucks were able to hold off their offensive attack. Justin Styffe sealed the win for the Bucks with an empty net goal with 6.8 seconds left, with assists by Ryan Sparling and Matt Hanson.
