Bucks Beat Rayz 2-1, Laredo Wins Third Straight

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The defending CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks squeaked out a 2-1 victory over the Corpus Christi Rayz on Saturday night at the American Bank Center in front of 4,002 fans. Laredo's win sets a new franchise record with their seventh straight on the road. Goalie Kevin Reiter was terrific in net allowing just one goal as the Bucks won their third straight. Overall the Bucks have won five of their last six games, recording a standings point in all six and going 5-0-1. Laredo is a Southern Conference best 27-9-3 with 57 points and they lead the Southeast Division by 10 points over Corpus Christi. The Bucks are currently on a six game road trip. The Bucks scored the only goal of the first period on a power play chance. Forward Leo Thomas cut into the Rayz end and got behind the defense then lifted a wrist shot high stick side into the cage at 10:58. It was his 12th of the season and the sixth straight game Laredo has scored on the man advantage.

In the second period Laredo again capitalized on the power play as forward Serge Dube had his shot from the high point blocked, but defenseman Adam Rivet was in the left circle to scoop it up and fire it home at 13:56. It was his 14th of the season, making it 2-0 Bucks. Late in the frame on another Laredo power play chance defenseman Paul Elliott teed up a wrist shot from the slot that clanked off the cross bar.

Early in the third period the Rayz got on the scoreboard. On a power play chance forward Nicklas Lindberg tried a centering feed that banked off a Bucks defenseman and into the net at 4:50. At 9:13 of the frame the Bucks went to work on a full two-minute two-man advantage, but were unable to capitalize and the lead stayed 2-1 Laredo. With 3:21 left in regulation the Rayz went on a full two-minute two-man advantage of their own, but the Bucks turned in stellar work on the penalty kill and stopped the chance. With time ticking down Laredo bottled up Corpus in their end and ran out the clock to seal the victory. FINAL SCORE Laredo 2, Corpus Christi 1.

Reiter was rock solid between the pipes, stopping 33 of 34 shots and improving to 8-2-0. Brent Zelenewich allowed two goals on 29 shots and fell to 8-7-2. The Bucks were 2-9 on the power play, while Corpus Christi was 1-8. The Rayz out shot Laredo 34-29.
