Des Moines Buccaneers News Release
Urbandale (IA) The Des Moines Buccaneers and John Stoddard Cancer Center are proud to announce that the annual jersey auction to benefit cancer-fighting programs in Central Iowa will take place this Saturday night, January 4th following the Buccaneers game vs. the Fargo Force at Buccaneer Arena at 7pm
Buccaneers' players will once again be wearing special jerseys that fans are encouraged to bid on during the live auction after the game. 100% of the proceeds raised during the auction go to the John Stoddard Cancer Center, with hospital staff members on hand to take the payments directly. A portion of the donation is tax-deductible.
"The jersey auction is one of our favorite events to hold each year as its great to see our fans rise to the occasion in an absolute win-win situation for everyone. The money raised goes to a great institution while the fans get to go home with their favorite player's jersey" says Buccaneers' Director of Communications Scott Montesano.
This is the sixth straight year the Buccaneers and John Stoddard Cancer Center have teamed up to hold a jersey auction with proceeds going directly back into various John Stoddard sponsored programs locally.
The jersey auction is part of an entire evening of making the community more aware of cancer's direct impact as a disease and its effects on everyone. Throughout the night, staff members from Unity Point Health Systems will be on hand providing information on risk factors as well as the numerous services available locally.
"It is important that we all come together to overcome this disease. Know your risks, get your screenings and educate others about the importance of early detection" says Carma Herring the Executive Director of the John Stoddard Cancer Center.
Since the jersey auction partnership began, Des Moines Buccaneer fans have helped raise more than $50,000 for the John Stoddard Cancer Center.
Godbout Delivers
First-year Buccaneer, and Michigan State recruit, Marcel Godbout had a breakout weekend for the Buccaneers registering 4pts (3g, 1a) in two games.
In the Buccaneers' game Friday against Cedar Rapids, the Michigan native scored two goals including a third period goal that completed a comeback for the Bucs. Then Saturday in Chicago he tallied the Bucs' first goal and assisted on the team's second.
For the season, Godbout's seven goals are good enough for second on the team, even though he missed four games in early November while playing for the U.S. Select Team at the World Junior A Challenge.
The Des Moines Buccaneers are in their 34th consecutive season in the United States Hockey League. Since 1980, the Buccaneers have produced hundreds of NCAA Division I players and dozens of professional alumni.
