State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA -- Kelson Brown notched a double and a triple while scoring both State College Spikes runs, but three Auburn Doubledays runs with two outs in the first inning were the difference as the Spikes fell, 3-2, on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Brown's second-inning double to the left-center field gap enabled State College (32-40) to get on the board after Kevin Mort's single and Drew Maggi's sacrifice fly to right field. In the fourth inning, the Spikes drew within one after Brown led off with a triple and scored on an RBI groundout by Miguel Mendez.
Auburn (34-38) took the lead in the top of the first against State College starter Tyler Waldron (4-7) with a four-hit frame. Three of the hits were doubles, and three came after the second out of innings to allow the Doubledays to score their three runs. Waldron settled down to retire 11 in a row after allowing another hit in the second, but ended up taking the loss.
Mel Rojas, Jr. also contributed a pair of hits, including a double, for the Spikes, who dropped their seventh consecutive game. Mort, who made his first start in the New York-Penn League at second base, went 1-for-3 on the night
Waldron totaled four strikeouts and allowed a total of six hits over five innings of work. The right-hander made his ninth start of five innings or more in his professional career, and finished his final start of the year with a near 4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the season (39-to-11).
Doubledays reliever Travis Garrett (4-3) picked up the win with two shutout innings, allowing no hits and no walks while striking out one. Dayton Marze (8) set the Spikes down in order in the ninth inning to earn the save.
Friday, the Spikes start their final series of the 2010 season with a 7:05 p.m. SawBuck Series matchup against the Williamsport Crosscutters at Historic Bowman Field. State College will send left-hander Zack Dodson (2-5) to the mound to face an as yet unnamed Williamsport starter. The Crosscutters are in the New York-Penn League Wild Card lead by a half-game over Jamestown.
Fans can catch all of the action via the Spikes Radio Network and flagship station 95.3 FM 3WZ starting at 6:50 p.m. with the Spikes GameDay Show live from Historic Bowman Field.
The Spikes' radio broadcast can also be heard worldwide through the "Listen Live" link on StateCollegeSpikes.com, provided by 95.3 FM 3WZ.
