Lake Monsters Held To Just 3 Hits In 8-1 Loss At Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, NY --- Five Brooklyn pitchers combined on a three-hitter, Joe Bonfe went 3-for-4 with three runs and Juan Centeno was 2-for-4 with two RBI doubles as the Cyclones defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters 8-1 in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at MCU Park.

Lake Monster starter Aaron Barrett (0-5) allowed one run on two hits over the first three inning before Brooklyn scored three runs on three hits in the fourth inning for a 4-0 lead. The Cyclones added two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings off Vermont reliever Colin Bates for an 8-0 advantage.

Vermont got its only run of the game on a Blake Kelso solo home run in the eighth inning. It was Kelso's first home run of the season and one of just three hits for the Lake Monsters in the game. Brooklyn starter Yohan Almonte struckout four in four hitless innings, while Daniel Carela (2-1) two strikeouts in 1 2/3 hitless innings for the win.

The Lake Monsters had just one base runner over the first five innings when Kelso reached on strikeout wild pitch in the fourth inning. Besides Kelso's home run in the eighth, Vermont's only other two hits came on back-to-back singles from David Freitas and Ronnie LaBrie to open the seventh inning.

Centeno had RBI doubles in the second and sixth innings for the Cyclones, while Bonfe singled in each of his first three at bats after going 4-for-4 in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader. Will Cherry also had RBI singles in the fourth and seventh innings for Brooklyn (49-23), which took three of four in the series.

A.J. Cole, Washington's fourth-round pick in the 2010 draft, made his professional debut in the fifth inning for Vermont. The right-hander allowed one hit with one walk and one strikeout in a scoreless inning.

Vermont (34-36) fell two games below .500 for the first time this season with the loss and are now 2 1/2 games behind Tri-City for first-place in the Stedler Division with four games remaining. The Lake Monsters head to Staten Island for a four-game series to end the season beginning Friday at 7:00 pm.
