Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
Brooklyn, NY - The Cyclones turned a nail-biter into a laugher with seven runs in the late innings to snap their six-game losing streak with a 10-3 win over the Aberdeen IronBirds on Saturday night. Brooklyn scored four runs courtesy of IronBird wild pitches and walked nine times while Justin Guerrera connected on his first home run since joining the Cyclones - a two run shot.
Oscar Rojas (5-2) made the start for Brooklyn and worked in an out of trouble for most of the night. The righthander allowed nine hits over his 5.0 innings of work but was able to limit the damage to collect his fifth win of the season.
Aberdeen drew first blood, scoring a single run in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly from Billy Cook. But Brooklyn answered quickly, as Brandon McIlwain leading off the bottom of the frame with a single before stealing second and third base. Jose Peroza then laced a single up the middle to push McIlwain home and even things up at 1-1.
Aberdeen snatched the lead back in the top of the third, putting up a skinny run to make it 2-1. But in the bottom of the fifth Brooklyn took a lead they would not relinquish when Justin Guerrera - making just his second start with the Cyclones - connected on a two-run shot that gave Brooklyn a 3-2 advantage after five.
After trading zeroes in the sixth, Aberdeen threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases against LHP Nathan Lavender. But the southpaw was able to get Collin Burns to ground out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the frame the Cyclones took control of the game with a two-out rally aided by the IronBirds. Shervyen Newton got things started with an RBI single and after JT Schwartz was able to follow with a walk, the bases were loaded for Brandon McIlwain. With the Cyclones slugger batting, Aberdeen reliever Ricky Ramirez uncorked three wild pitches, allowing three runs to score and cleared the bases for Brooklyn to give them a 7-2 lead.
Brooklyn capped their scoring in the eighth when Jose Peroza worked a walk and Jaylen Palmer followed with a single to put two men on with nobody out. Joe Suozzi took advantage of the scoring chance with a two-RBI triple and then would score himself on a wild pitch to make the score 10-2.
The IronBirds hit a home run in the top of the ninth, a solo shot from Connor Norby, to make the final score 10-3.
The Cyclones will close out the series on Sunday afternoon at 2:00. It's a Sunday Funday with inflatables in The Backyard, FREE Dippin' Dots for Kids, Kids Run the Bases Post-Game and the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Cyclones trucker cap. Gates open at 1:00 PM.
