Broncos Wrap up Preseason in Style, Beat Hurricanes 5-1

After the Broncos went 0/3 in their first three preseason contests all away from home, the Swift Current Broncos closed out the 2018 preseason with an incredible team performance against the Lethbridge Hurricanes, bouncing back with a 5-1 win at the Innovation Credit Union i-Plex.
Lethbridge struck first as Ty Prefontaine slapped in his second of the preseason on a Canes power play to make it 1-0 Hurricanes through 20 minutes.
Shots on goal were 12-4 in favour of the Hurricanes when the middle frame got underway and that's when the home team completely pulled a topsy-turvy, firing 16 straight shots on goal and collecting two goals from that barrage.
Hurricanes forward Alex Cotton received a five-minute major penalty for boarding during that span. While on the man advantage, newly acquired forward Alec Zawatsky blasted in his first of the preseason after intercepting a Hurricanes clearing attempt.
A pair of Kings got together for the Broncos go-ahead goal as rookie forward Ben King scored 1:04 later to put the Broncos ahead 2-1. Noah King assisted on the play and Swift Current carried that advantage into the final frame.
17-year-old forward Matthew Culling deposited his first of the preseason 32 seconds into the third period when he banged home a rebound opportunity. Tanner Nagel and Max Patterson drew assists on the goal.
Nagel's grit and determination saw him get a goal as he backhanded in the Broncos fourth goal of the night while he was battling in front of the net with Hurricanes defenders.
Culling then slicked his way towards the Hurricanes crease and snuck a low shot by Canes goaltender Carl Tetachuk to further grow the Bronco lead to 5-1 which stood as the final.
Shots on goal were 30-24 in favour of Swift Current. The Broncos power play clicked twice on eight opportunities while the Hurricanes finished 1/3 on the man advantage.
Game Summary
In other news, the Broncos trimmed down their roster shortly after the game. Forward Logan Foster was released while forward Alex Thacker and defenceman Ben Wood were reassigned.
Swift Current posted a 1-3-0 record in the 2018 preseason and now look ahead to the Pioneer Coop Home Opener on Friday, September 21st vs. the Saskatoon Blades. Puck drop is set for 7:00pm.
