Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen, TX - Laredo Broncos (6-5) second baseman Ivan Reyes hit a three-run home run in the third as the Broncos beat the Harlingen WhiteWings (3-8) 7-3 tonight at Harlingen Field.
The WhiteWings scored first for the fifth-straight game as Bub Bergstrom led off with a walk and moved to second on a David Fowler single. Kevin Griffin grounded into a fielder's choice as the relay throw to attempt to turn a double play was thrown away, allowing Bergstrom to score to give the WhiteWings a 1-0 lead against Santo Hernandez (2-0).
Alex Gett (0-2) cruised through the first two innings, but ran into trouble with one out in the third. Arnoldo Ponce double and Luany Sanchez singled. Edgard Celemnte followed with an RBI-single. One out later, Reyes hit his third home run of the season, a three-run shot, to make it 4-1 Broncos.
The WhiteWings got two of those runs right back in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Griffin single and Ryan Fox double Griffin home. One out later, Terry Roblez hit an RBI-single to make it 4-3.
Gett ended up going five innings in his first start, allowing four runs on seven hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
The Broncos scored two unearned runs in the eighth against Bobby Darling as Jose Salas reached on an error and later scored on an RBI-fielder's choice that Santiago Guerrero grounded into. One out later, Anthony Bennett hit an RBI-single to make it 6-3 Broncos.
The Broncos picked up an insurance run in the ninth against Dan Ziegler as Luany Sanchez and Edgard Clemente hit back-to-back doubles to make it 7-3.
It was more than enough for Hernandez, who allowed three runs (two earned) on ten hits while walking two (one intentionally) and striking out nine in seven innings.
Rusty Jones picked up his first save with an inning and two-thirds of scoreless baseball.
The WhiteWings and Broncos play game two of this three-game set tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. Left-hander Jorge Lugo (0-0) will start for the WhiteWings against right-hander Henry Lozado (0-2).
