
Broncos Get Victory Behind Strong Pitching Performance

Harlingen, TX - The Laredo Broncos took advantage of Harlingen's defense as they took game 2 of the 3 game set by a score of 7-3. at Harlingen Field on Saturday Night defeating the Whitewings 7-3. The Broncos continue on their 9 game road trip with the finale of a 3 game series against the Harlingen WhiteWings on Sunday Night. For more info call (956)-722-BASE (2273).
The WhiteWings got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning against Broncos starter Santo Hernandez. Bub Bergstrom led off with a walk and then went to 2nd on an infield single by David Fowler. Then Kevin Griffin hit a double play ball to Ivan Reyes who got the out at 2nd but Arnoldo Ponce's throw to Jose Salas at first was in the dirt and it got by Salas scoring Bergstrom and giving Harlingen an early 1-0 lead.
Laredo would get their offense going in the top of the third inning. With one out Arnoldo Ponce hit a double and went to third on a single by Luany Sanchez. Sanchez would advanced to 2nd on the play as the relay throw got by Harlingen's catcher. Edgard Clemente would follow with an rbi single scoring Ponce and moving Sanchez to third. Jose Salas would strike out but then Ivan Reyes hit a 3 run home run to give Laredo a 4-1 lead.
Harlingen would get some of those runs back in the bottom half of the 3rd. With one out Kevin Griffin singled. He would score on a double by Ryan Fox. Then with two outs Argelis Nunez singled in Fox from 2nd base and the score was 4-3 Laredo after 3 innings.
Broncos starter Santo Hernandez would settle down after that. He went 7 innings giving up 3 runs on 10 hits and he struck out 9 while only walking 1. His counterpart for the WhiteWings Alex Gett only had the one bad inning. He went 5 innings giving up 4 runs on 7 hits. Gett struck out 7 and walked none.
Laredo would get 2 big insurance runs against WhiteWings reliever Bobby Darling in the 8th inning. Jose Salas led off the inning reaching base on a error. Then Ivan Reyes singled moving Salas to 3rd base. Santiago Guerrero would then hit into a fielders choice that force out Reyes but scored Salas. Then Guerrero would steal 2nd base and score on single by Anthony Bennett to give the Broncos a 6-3 lead.
The WhiteWings would try to rally in the bottom of the 8th inning against Broncos reliever Dan Sausville. Argelis Nunez led off with a single. Then Candelario Perez would single with one out putting runners on 2nd and 3rd. Rusty Jones would come in for Laredo and get Bub Bergstrom to hit into an inning ending double play keeping the Broncos 3 run lead.
The Broncos would tack on one more insurance run in the top of the 9th. With one out Luany Sanchez doubled. The next batter Edgard Clemente would also double knocking in Sanchez to give Laredo a 7-3 lead.
Jones would stay in the game and despite having the first two men of the inning reach he gave up no runs as The Broncos beat the Whitewings 7-3.
One big stat so far in the series has been the errors of Harlingen. Tonight they committed 5 errors which makes 8 in the 2 games so far.
The Broncos improve their record to 6-5 on the season. The 2nd series of Laredo's 9 game road trip continues on Sunday night at 6:05 with the 3rd game of the 3 game series against the Harlingen WhiteWings.
