Swift Current Broncos News Release
SWIFT CURRENT, SK - The Swift Current Broncos (10-37-1-3) played well for long stretches against the Winnipeg ICE (32-19-1-0) Wednesday night, but the ICE capitalized on their chances and handed the Broncos an 8-3 loss.
The Broncos had a strong opening 12 minutes of the game, outshooting the ICE by a 6-1 margin, but unable to solve Liam Hughes in the early going.
Winnipeg would open the scoring off a strong forecheck as they were able to force a turnover deep in the Broncos zone. Jackson Leppard then centred for Nolan Orzeck who was able to walk in and blast a slap shot off the glove of Isaiah DiLaura and in 14:04 into the game.
Swift Current answered back quickly as Hayden Ostir raced in on the forecheck, forcing Hughes to play the puck quickly behind his net. Hughes didn't get enough on his clearing attempt and Ostir was able to hook the puck in front for Jaxan Kaluski to tie the game.
The ICE were able to regain their lead before the period was over; Peyton Krebs worked a saucer pass over a sprawling Garrett Sambrook for Owen Pederson to fire a one timer past DiLaura on a two-on-rush with 1:21 remaining in the first.
Isaac Johnson extended the ICE lead early in the next period as he finished off a nice give-and-go passing play, beating DiLaura on the backhand in front of the net 1:43 into the second.
Pederson scored his second of the game, cutting across the slot off the rush to make it 4-1 before a five-on-three power-play goal by Ben Zloty to push the ICE lead to 5-1.
Swift Current stopped the bleeding with a pair of quick goals as Matthew Benson scored off a rebound in the slot before Hayden Ostir took a centring pass from below the goal line to cut Winnipeg's lead to 5-3 heading into the third period.
Winnipeg once again found their legs in the third period as James Form, Michal Teply and Cole Muir scored eight minutes apart to cap off the scoring as Winnipeg won 8-3, handing the Broncos their sixth loss in a row.
The Broncos will look to rebound Friday night as they head to Prince Albert to play the Raiders (28-16-5-4).
Announced attendance was 1,952.
