Swift Current Broncos News Release
SWIFT CURRENT, SK - The Swift Current Broncos (2-4-0-1) had a 5-1 lead after one period against the Winnipeg ICE (4-4-1-0) Saturday night, but the lead wouldn't hold as the ICE chipped away at the lead and eventually won 6-5 in a shootout.
Just 46 seconds into the game, Isaac Johnson jumped on a rebound off Isaac Poulter's left pad to open the scoring.
Less than three minutes later, Joona Kiviniemi poked the puck free behind the ICE net and Ethan Regnier slid it through the five hole of an unsuspecting Gage Alexander to tie the game.
Later in the period, while on the power play, Ben King wired a shot from the left circle past Alexander's blocker to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead. Just 24 seconds later, Aiden Bulych found a loose puck on a goal mouth scramble to make it 3-1.
Twenty one seconds after Bulych's goal, the Broncos gained the ICE line off the rush and Regnier dropped the puck to Alex Moar who fired a shot into the top corner for his first of the year, to cap off three goals in 45 seconds. The goal chased Alexander who was replaced by Jesse Makaj.
With a minute to go in the period, Kiviniemi found a rebound and tucked it home to give the Broncos a 5-1 lead heading into the intermission.
The ICE's comeback began 5:40 into the second. Poulter covered the puck as it rolled in on him with players heading to the net. He thought about covering for a faceoff but then passed it off. The puck went right to Jakin Smallwood who easily scored his second of the year to make it 5-2.
Thirty-three seconds later Owen Pederson scored his first of two on the night when he jumped on a rebound off a long shot from the line to make it 5-3.
Pederson then deflected a shot from the blue line through the five hole of Poulter to cut the Broncos lead down to 5-4 heading into the third.
Halfway through the third, Swift Current had a great shift in the offensive zone before Matthew Culling was called for hooking.
Johnson made the Broncos pay by scoring his second of the night on a cross-seam pass to tie the game at five.
In overtime, both teams had great chances to end it, but the Broncos may have had the edge. King and Kiviniemi were both stymied by Makaj to see the game go to a shootout.
After Regnier was turned aside, Connor McClennon scored to put the ICE ahead. Kasper Puutio and Michal Teply were stopped, setting the stage for King to try and keep the game alive. He was turned aside by the blocker of Makaj as the ICE sealed the comeback.
Swift Current now heads out on the road for BC road trip, which has stops in Kamloops, Kelowna, Victoria, Vancouver and Prince George.
Announced attendance was 2,043.
