Saskatoon Blades News Release
Saskatoon, SK - The Saskatoon Blades have won on home ice for the second straight game, defeating the Lethbridge Hurricanes 2-1 on Friday night in Saskatoon.
The low scoring affair was highlighted by strong play by both teams' goaltenders, as Blades rookie Koen MacInnes made his first home start in front of a strong Blades crowd and stopped 26 shots for an outstanding .963 SVS%.
Saskatoon opened the scoring with just over 5 minutes to go in the second period as Cyle McNabb beat a Hurricanes' defender wide and found Riley McKay on the far side. McKay swiftly went from forehand to backhand putting the Blades up 1-0. The home side outshot Lethbridge 15-8 in the second period as they found their legs following a late-night arrival from last night's win in Brandon.
The Blades added insurance to their lead early in the third period. Chase Wouters retrieved a McKay rebound and moved behind the net before finding Nolan Kneen sneaking into the slot with a precise backhand pass. Kneen fired home his second goal of the season, the eventual game winner, to put the Blades up by 2.
Lethbridge found a goal of their own with 7:01 to go in the game as Dylan Cozens took advantage of a Blades' turnover at the blueline and scored on a breakaway. However, Saskatoon were able to hold off a late Hurricanes' surge and win their 3rd straight game and extend their point streak to 6 (5-0-0-1).
With an assist, Wouters extends his point streak to five games (3G-2A) while Kneen scored his second game-winning-goal in as many nights.
Saskatoon now heads out on the road for a four-game road trip. The Blades open the trip on Monday in Calgary against the Hitmen for a rare Monday matinee and then face the Medicine Hat Tigers on Tuesday night.
