Swift Current Broncos News Release
Having clinched second place in the WHL's East Division standings, the Swift Current Broncos entered the matchup against the Saskatoon Blades looking to stay sharp in preparation for the 2018 WHL Playoffs. 44 shots on goal were put up by the Broncos but the home team dropped their third straight contest overall, losing 5-2 on Wednesday night.
Blades forward Kirby Dach scored the first goal with only 15 seconds left in the opening period as he completed a give-and-go play with line mate Eric Florchuk for the lone goal through 20 minutes of action. Despite being down 1-0, the Broncos dominated the shot clock, outshooting Saskatoon 12-4 entering the second period.
Braylon Shmyr scored his 37th of the season after releasing a low shot that snuck through the five-hole of Broncos netminder Stuart Skinner, making it a 2-0 deficit for Swift Current.
However, Kaden Elder got the home team on the board as Ethan Regnier completed a nifty backhand pass from the side of the Blades goal to the 19-year-old Elder for his third goal in as many games.
Then the Broncos tied it up on the power play as Matteo Gennaro followed up his own shot and got one by Blades goaltender Tyler Brown at the 12:38 mark.
Before the horn went off for the second intermission, Michael Farren redirected the go-ahead goal for Saskatoon on a power play of their own with less than nine seconds on the clock.
Trailing by a goal, things didn't get much better for Swift Current in the third period as Max Gerlach netted a pair of goals to put Saskatoon up 5-2 and that stood as the final score.
Shots on goal were 44-27 in favour of Swift Current. The Blades went 2/4 on the power play while the Broncos notched a goal on three opportunities.
Swift Current wraps up the regular season portion of their schedule with a back-to-back set against the Regina Pats over the weekend. The first game is slated for Friday, March 16th at the Brandt Centre in Regina. Puck drop is set for 7:00pm CT.
