Swift Current Broncos News Release
Swift Current, Sask. - Another high scoring game for the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday night as they squeaked by the Moose Jaw Warriors 7-6.
A 6-1 lead for the Broncos evaporated in the third period, but the home team was able to get the last laugh to move to within two points of the Warriors.
"Happy with the two points," said Broncos Interim Head Coach Taras McEwen. "And I'm happy with the first two periods and how we were able to play."
The Broncos got off to a fantastic start in the hockey game, leading 5-1 after forty minutes of hockey with two goals from Ty Coupland and Luke Mistelbacher, and Connor Hvidston scoring once. Moose Jaws goal came from Martin Rysavy.
Connor Gabriel even scored 11 seconds in to the third period to extend the Broncos lead to 6-1, but things went south for the Broncos as the Warriors scored five unanswered to tie the game. Atley Calvert and Jagger Firkus each had two goals while Ethan Semeniuk and Rilen Kovacevic each had singles. It was 6-5 before four minutes had elapsed in the third before the Warriors tied it up just across the halfway point of the period.
"They were being a little more aggressive, obviously being down," McEwen said. "Their forwards were getting out, and getting out early and really pushing our defence. I just thought our forwards weren't coming back or weren't reloading as hard as we wanted to."
Josh Filmon was able to score with about seven minutes to play in the third to restore the Broncos lead, one they would hold onto the rest of the way.
Matthew Kieper stopped 28 of 34 in the contest earning the victory as the Broncos got their 20th victory as a team on the season.
The powerplay was 1-for-2, and the penalty kill was 1-for-4.
The Broncos are back in action on Tuesday when the Tri-City Americans come to town.
