Regina Pats News Release
REGINA - Coming off back-to-back wins, the Regina Pats had their sights set on their first three-game win streak of the season.
But a 4-2 loss to the Swift Current Broncos Thursday night inside the Subway WHL Hub put an abrupt end to the Pats win streak, as Caleb Wyrostok scored the game-winner for the Broncos 8:04 into the third period before an Aiden Bulych empty-netter sealed the game.
"With all the success and everything we've worked on for 20 games to see our group develop into what they have and to see them let each other down the way they did tonight in the third period, it's disappointing, it's unfortunate," said Regina head coach Dave Struch.
Swift Current opened the scoring late in the first when Michael Farren scored his first of two on the night, with his second coming in the middle frame. Regina got second period power play goals from Logan Nijhoff and Carson Denomie's WHL-leading 14th of the season, as the teams skated to the locker room tied at 2-2.
The Pats out-chanced the Broncos on the night, but Farren and company were opportunistic, making the most of their chances against Pats netminder Spencer Welke, who stopped 21 of 24 shots. On the Swift Current side, Reid Dyck was the game's first star, stopping 31 shots in the victory.
"Our goaltender was really good. You can't do that to your goalie who's been working hard in practice all year and do that, what we did in the third period," Struch pointed out.
"We did everything right in the first two periods tonight. We came out playing the right way. The score, who cares what the score is. The guys played great. First and second periods was exactly how we needed to play."
Thursday marked Regina's lone loss of the season against the Broncos and snapped a five-game win streak for the Regiment against Swift Current.
Up next for Regina is a Friday night contest with the Moose Jaw Warriors, in the third to last game for the Pats inside the East Division Hub.
