Winnipeg Ice News Release

A pivotal matchup for top three took place tonight as the Winnipeg ICE faced off against the Saskatoon Blades, with the winner taking sole possession of second place, behind only the Brandon Wheat Kings. Winnipeg is coming off back-to-back wins against Swift Current on Monday and Moose Jaw on Wednesday. The Blades are looking to get back into the win column after three straight loses against Swift Current, Regina, and a 4-0 loss against the Prince Albert Raiders last night. Gage Alexander started for the ICE, as Koen MacInnes got the call for the Blades.

After killing off the game's first penalty, Winnipeg took the lead, as Owen Pederson snapped a quick shot past MacInnes after receiving a pass from Connor McClennon on a 2-on-2. Peyton Krebs picked up the second assist on the goal that came at 6:05 extending his point streak to a franchise tying 21 games. He is now tied with Mike Comrie who set the record in 2000-2001. Mike Ladyman made it 2-0 for the ICE on his first goal of the season as he took the puck to the net and fired a backhand which was turned away by MacInnes, but the ICE defensemen picked up his own rebound and buried it inside the post. Shots were 12-9 in favour of the ICE after the first period.

McClennon scored the lone goal in the second frame with a beautiful top corner snipe from the slot, after Krebs danced around two Blades' players before dishing it off for his second assist of the game. McClennon's fourteenth goal of the season came at 14:32. The ICE continued to lead in shots 24-18 heading into the second intermission.

Pederson and McClennon connected again in the third as McClennon slid over a pass to Pederson at the far post who buried it past MacInnes for his second of the game, and McClennon's third point of the night. It took some puck luck for the Blades to solve Alexander in the third period as Alex Morozoff threw a puck to the slot and it hit McClennon's skate and went directly through Alexander's five hole to get Saskatoon on the board. The game would finish 4-1 in favour of the ICE as Winnipeg now sit alone in second, just one point off the Wheat Kings for first place.

Winnipeg will have two days off before hitting the ice on Monday for a tilt against the Prince Albert Raiders. Puck drop for that one is 5:00pm CT.
