Swift Current Broncos News Release
Regina, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos (4-16-1-0) were in a tight battle with the Brandon Wheat Kings (16-3-2-0) Wednesday night, but two quick goals by Brandon late in the second period proved costly in a 6-1 loss.
The game didn't see it's first goal until there was 5:32 left in the opening period when Lynden McCallum came down the left wing off the rush. McCallum cut across the Bronco crease and jammed the puck on net, which Isaac Poulter was able to stop, but the momentum of the puck carried it over the goal line as Brandon led 1-0 after the first.
Poulter came up with a sensational save early in the second, stretching out to his blocker side to deny Chad Nychuk of a shorthanded goal off a centring pass from the corner.
Brandon would eventually cash in on their fourth power play of the game with Nolan Ritchie scoring from the left circle to make it 2-0 Wheat Kings with 5:01 left.
The Broncos responded with a power-play goal of the own less than two minutes later as Mathew Ward took a feed from below the goal line and one timed home his fifth goal of the season.
The momentum quickly swung back into Brandon's favour as they scored off a net-front scramble less than a minute after Ward's goal, before adding another in the final minute of the second to lead 4-1 through 40.
The Wheat Kings added two more power-play goals in the third, cruising to a 6-1 win and extending their lead atop the East Division.
The Broncos will quickly have to put the loss behind them as they face the Regina Pats (8-9-2-1) Thursday at 8:00.
