Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
The Brandon Wheat Kings (13-3-2-0) face the Swift Current Broncos (4-15-1-0) this afternoon at 5 PM in what will be their fourth and final meeting for the two teams this season. Brandon's enters the game after a two day break and leading the WHL with 31 points, one point ahead of the second place Saskatoon Blades. They've also won their last four games in a row, beating the Winnipeg ICE and Moose Jaw Warriors twice each. The Broncos sit in last place among the East Division after losing to the Winnipeg ICE on Monday 5-2.
McCartney stays money
Reigning WHL Player of the Week, Ben McCartney has been on a tear as of late. Aside from scoring in all but two games this season, the 19-year old forward had four goals and eight assists in four games last week and sits behind only Peyton Krebs of the ICE for most points scored this season. In Sunday's thrilling overtime win on Sunday, McCartney had four assists, including the primary assist on Braden Schneider's OT winner. The Macdonald, Manitoba native also has a +18 on the season to go along with his 4 game-winning goals.
Three is Company
McCartney, Ridly Greig and Braden Schneider all belong to the WHL Eastern Division Team of the Week after a solid outing by all three. In their last four games, McCartney had 4G-8A-12 points and +8, Greig finished with 3G-4A-7 points and Schneider put up 1G-6A-7 points - +8. All three have had outstanding seasons but the Wheat Kings' current streak wouldn't be possible without them.
Previous Meetings this Season
According to the scoresheet, the Wheat Kings have handled the Broncos comfortably this season but it hasn't been as easy as it may look. In their second meeting on March 28, the Broncos led the Wheat Kings 2-0 in the second period thanks in large part to their goaltender, Isaac Poulter. Poulter made 33 saves that game and gave up two power play goals on seven chances by the Wheat Kings.
