Brockton Rox News Release

(Brockton, Mass. - September 2, 2011) - The Brockton Rox (23-22, 49-42) mounted one of their most impressive onslaughts of the season Friday night, crushing the New Jersey Jackals (57-34, 30-14) 18-4, while pounding out 19 hits in the opener of the final series of the regular season.

Desperately needing a win, the Rox charged out of the gate early against Jackals starter Michael Moore (5-1), plating six runs on five hits, while sending eleven batters to the plate in the first inning. Brockton then put the game out of reach with a seven-run fourth frame, sending eleven men to the plate once again, while amassing a 14-2 lead.

Moore allowed a league record 14 earned runs on eleven hits in four innings and walked six in the loss.

Chris Valencia, Melvin Falu, Shawn Williams and Dan Barbero each produced three RBIs in the game, while Valencia, Barbero and Phillip Cuadrado each had three hits. Falu's solo home run in the second frame was his ninth of the season.

Julian Sampson (10-5) became the first Rox pitcher to reach double digits wins with the victory. The righthander went five innings, allowing four runs on three hits, while walking a season high-tying five.

The damage against Sampson came on a pair of two-run homers, the first by D'Angelo Jimenez in the third and the second by Bryan Sabatella in the fifth.

The 18 runs by the Rox are the most in franchise history against the Jackals, with Cuadrado scoring a game high three times.

The win for the Rox snaps a ten game win streak for New Jersey and with Worcester dropping both games of a doubleheader against Quebec, Brockton now holds a one half game lead over their eastern Massachusetts rival and can clinch a playoff berth with wins in the final two games of the season.

The series continues with a pivotal game two Saturday night. Jenny Finch visits Campanelli Stadium on the final Celebrity Saturday of the season, as John Kelly (1-1, 2.22) takes on Jon Kibler (3-5, 5.64) with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
