Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER-The Brockton Rox defeated the Worcester Tornadoes, 5-2 in front of a sellout crowd Friday night at Hanover Insurance Park.
John Kelly (1-0), making his first start for the Rox this year, baffled the Tornado bats all night, as he allowed six hits and no runs with five strikeouts over seven innings of work. DJ Mattox (0-2) got the loss for the Tornadoes, going six innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs while walking six and striking out five. The Tornado offense was lead by Chris Colabello (3-4, RBI) and Miles Page (1-4, RBI).
Mattox got into trouble in the second inning when former Tornado Zach Strong singled into center and moved to second on the play with Lucas Taylor's error in center. Strong then scored on Jason Radwan's single to right. The damage could have been worse, however catcher Onix Mercado caught Radwan stealing second. After Kris Zacuto walked and moved to second on Mattox's second consecutive walk to Mike Torres, Mercado caught Torres leaning the wrong way off first. Eugene Julien followed with a single to left, sending Zacuto home, however a strong throw from Josh Beauregard got Zacuto at the plate.
Brockton made the score 2-0 in the third when Mike Scanzano lead off the inning with a single and moved to third on Guye Senjem's single to right. Strong knocked in Brockton's second run with a ground ball fielder's choice to short.
Brockton tacked on another run in the sixth inning when Strong walked and moved to third on Radwan's single to right. Torres' sacrifice to right scored Strong, giving the Rox a 3-0 lead. Some added insurance for Brockton came in the top of the ninth when Mike Scanzano hit a two-run bases loaded double off Tornado reliever Chris Shank.
The Tornadoes first baserunner to reach third came in the sixth inning, yet failed to score when Colabello doubled down the left field line and moved to third on Keith Beauregard's infield single. Brockton's John Kelly continued his strong pitching performance by ending the threat with a groundball to third.
The Tornadoes got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth inning when Josh Beauregard doubled down the right field line and was driven in when Colabello added his third hit of the game with a single up the middle. The lead was cut to three in the bottom of the ninth when Jeff Lahair reached base on a walk and was driven in by Miles Page, who hit a double down the left field line.
Brockton ended the contest with seven hits and five runs while the Tornadoes had nine hits and two runs while committing four errors.
The Worcester Tornadoes will continue their series against the visiting Rox tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Sunday's game against Brockton will be at 2:05 p.m. and the series finale will be Monday night at 7:05 p.m.
