North Shore Spirit News Release

Pitching and defense were the story for much of this contest, but B.J. Weed changed that with one swing of the bat on a game-winning home run in the eighth inning to give the Spirit a 2-1 victory in the series opener with the Quebec Capitales at Fraser Field.

With the win, the Spirit improved to 19-14 on the season, while the Capitales fell to 12-22.

Bryan Morse pitched eight full innings, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out six to earn the victory. Kevin Fitzgerald picked up a save with a scoreless ninth inning. Quebec reliever Marc-Andre Major allowed one run on one hit in one inning of work to suffer the loss.

Quebec took the early lead in this contest, manufacturing a first inning score thanks to their fleet-footed leadoff hitter Alex Garcia. Garcia reached on an infield single to get things started, stole second and third, and scored on Willie James' sacrifice fly to center.

The Spirit responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the third inning to even the score. After retiring the first batter he faced, Quebec starter Julien Tucker hit Spirit left fielder Garrett Weir a pitch. Vic Davilla sent Weir home with an RBI single to right field for the first Spirit score.

The score would stay knotted at one apiece until the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out in the inning, Weed launched a home run over the left field wall to give the Spirit their first lead of the game. The solo shot was Weed's second long ball of the season for the Spirit.

The Spirit and the Capitales will play game two of the three-game series tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. Joey Siak takes the mound for the Spirit while Keith Dunn gets the start for Quebec.
