Brockton Rox News Release

WORCESTER, MA - RHP John Kelly pitched seven shutout innings and SS Mike Scanzano had two hits and two RBI as the Brockton Rox won their fifth straight game, beating the Worcester Tornadoes 5-2 before a Hanover Insurance Park crowd of 3,182. The Rox never trailed in the game, taking the lead in the first inning and hanging on with the tying run at the plate in the ninth inning. 3B Zach Strong drove in a run and scored two against his former team. The five-game winning streak for the Rox is a season-best. The Rox win elevates their record to 16-17, just one game under the .500 mark.

Two outfield errors after singles by Strong and C Jason Radwan led to the first Rox run in the second inning, but Brockton failed to plate any further runs in the inning as three runners were thrown out on the bases. The Rox took a 2-0 lead on a fielders' choice groundout by Strong in the third. In the sixth inning, 2B Mike Torres made it a 3-0 Rox lead with a sacrifice fly, scoring Strong.

Meanwhile, Kelly worked in and out of trouble. He stranded two runners in the second, and two more in the sixth frame. He finished with seven innings of shutout baseball, and has thrown 11 innings with the Rox without allowing a run. RHP Kyle George gave up a two- out single to Tornado 1B Chris Colabello in the eighth to cut the lead to 3-1. However, Scanzano, whose 3rd inning single extended his hitting streak to seven-games, ripped a two-out double scoring two in the eighth to open the game for the Rox. RHP Jon Koch allowed a run in the ninth inning but struck out SS Bob Tewskbary with two runners on base to end the game.

Tomorrow the Rox send RHP Joey Baker (1-0, 1.83 ERA) to the hill to face Worcester RHP Junior Guerrero (5-2, 2.03 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
