(Nashua, NH) Nashua's Andy Dillard raced home with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday night when New Haven County reliever Cory Willey uncorked a wild pitch with the bases loaded to give the Pride (14-19) a 2-1 triumph over the Cutters (20-15). The victory extended Nashua's winning streak to three games and was played in front of 1,276 at Historic Holman Stadium.
It was a classic pitcher's duel through eight innings as New Haven County lefty Brad Whitworth and Nashua southpaw Vincent Davis were both outstanding. Whitworth allowed four hits through eight, walking one and striking out four. Davis scattered six hits, surrendering four walks and fanning one.
New Haven County's only run came in the first inning when Thomari Story-Harden doubled home Doug Vroman to make it 1-0.
The Pride tied it in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Jaffrey, New Hampshire native Elliot Shea. Shea's hit scored Billy Becher who opened the inning with a single advanced to second base on a walk to Steve Baker and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Sean Dobson.
Nashua won it in the ninth as Justin Knoff replaced Whitworth on the mound for the Cutters. Knoff couldn't get anyone out as Dillard leadoff the inning with a walk and moved to third on a single to right field by Glenn Murray. New Haven County then walked Tommy Rojas intentionally to load the bases. Willey replaced Knoff (3-3) for the Cutters and struck out Becher for the first out of the inning. Then on a one ball-one strike count to Baker, Willey threw a wild pitch to the backstop allowing Dillard to come across with the game-winner.
Jamie Baker (1-0) who worked a scoreless ninth inning for the Pride earned his first professional victory.
The same two teams resume their series Saturday evening at 7:05. It'll be a match-up of righthanders with Bryan Duplissie of East Swanzey, New Hampshire on the mound for the Pride and Tim Keinath scheduled to work for the Cutters. A fireworks spectacular will follow Saturday night's game.
